Shoulder season, otherwise known as “mud season” among locals, happens every spring and fall where the tourism in town slows down significantly.  After the Breckenridge Ski Resort closes, not many venture to the Rockies until Memorial Day.  Though summer may not be full blown in the mountains yet, there is plenty of sunshine, activities, and events to enjoy during the month of May before the streets fill again.  Here’s why Breckenridge is best to visit during the spring season.

Awesome Lodging Deals

Hotel rates and lodging rates are at their lowest price points of the year. Many restaurants and shops are running great specials and sales. There is no better time to stock up on your winter equipment for next year than springtime in the Rockies. If you still have the urge to hit the slopes, Arapahoe Basin typically stays open until the middle of May and yields incredible spring skiing.

It’s Not Crowded

Due to the lack of tourists visiting between closing day and the kick off to the summer season, you’ll feel a breath of fresh air walking around the nearly empty Main Street. Two hour waits to get a table at a restaurant, long ski lines, and parking woes are non-existent during this time of year, and Breckenridge is all yours to enjoy.

Try Out a Fat Bike!

Summit County has a plethora of great bike trails, but during the spring they may still have spots of slush and tend to get pretty muddy.  Many mountain bikers won’t hit the trails until the end of May or early June when the ground has hardened, but these are the kind of conditions a fat tire bike was designed for. Summit Fat Tire Society is a fantastic resource for all fat biking needs and info about fat tire bikes in Summit County.

Hiking

The wildflowers blooming across the Rocky Mountains are quite the site to see.  Plan a hike with your family or trek up to a 14,000+ foot summit this spring to catch 360 views of the flourishing valleys below you.

Whitewater Rafting

Believe it or not, the snow melt helps plenty whitewater stretches in Colorado get up to par for some milder rapids to paddle through come April and May each year.  Yes, the water is cold… but it’s going to be cold all summer so be sure to throw on that wet suit and splash jacket and head out on an adventure.
